The coffee is hot and the breeze is cool. Muscles sore and belly full. Itching to get back to work, but we know we are supposed to rest here. Take it in, enjoy the day, and allow for the work to be processed and reflected on.
This isnt a workout. Its rest day. However, as someone who's looking to improve its imperative that we treat this as we would our workouts. All in all, the rest day is part of the program and just as there is a task list for the training day, there is also one for the rest day. So, let's practice sharpening the mind and fueling the soul. Here's to setting yourself up for a good start.
Here are a few things I do personally to recharge. Some things are unique to my preferences in regards to what helps me perform psychologically, while others are widely used and help me perform physically.
In no particular order of affinity or priority:
A long aimless walk-about. I prefer something with scenery, and could walk anywhere between 90-180min.
Fasting. I dont prefer to eat in the morning, and enjoy a nice sit down dinner in the evening. Im already fueled, I'm not hungry, so I dont force it. Perhaps I miss some benefits in regards to nutrition, although I use it mainly to work on my relationship with food. Im aware that logic might not be universal.
Stretch. Any how and any time. For me, in regards to stretching, there's very little rhyme or reason. It's as simple as it feels like relief, it is.
The consumer break. Minimize the amount of time spent taking in information of any kind. This goes for all the things that we deem positive as well; listening to music, bullshitting with friends, reading, etc. To be clear, I do these things on my rest day, and am in no way saying to not do them. Engage in the practice of moderation, and be kind to oneself by indulging until full and not when satisfied. Spend more time just hanging out and sitting still.
The weird contradictory loophole. Play. In some instances bits of fun might be the right prescription for the so called rest day. Now the activities may not be restful, but the awesome consequence of play is usually feeling recharged and refocused.
Nothing revolutionary, but I do think its important that everyone figures out what makes them feel refreshed and ready to tackle more. Cheers to the rest day. Onward.
